Usually a hike in the woods only provides fresh air and exercise, but for this imaginative couple it changed the course of their lives. One of the West Coast’s most contemporary homes was inspired by an ancient relic stone wall they discovered and came to build their house around. The juxtaposition between ancient and modernist created a stunning design against views of the Cascade Mountain Range including Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. On the market for the first time, it is priced at $8.65 million.
Laden with an eclectic collection of building materials, the steel-travertine-and-glass home is accented with African slate, Indian and Brazilian granite, Chinese quartzite, Middle Eastern onyx, African rosewood and sheets of stainless steel. Designed by Thompson Vaivoda & Associates on ten sloping wooded acres, the 11,807-square-foot home includes four bedrooms, eight baths, formal rooms, family and media rooms. There are two specially crafted guest suites with rare Japanese peanut-figured tamo ash and quilted maple and a separate 1,127-square-foot completely outfitted guest quarters. With an all-open floor plan and glass-wall side, there is a chef’s kitchen and office-conference room with all rooms having sweeping views. The lower level also contains an indoor lap pool and opens to terraces and lawn. There is an elevator for traversing the three floors.
Portland’s Forest Park is one of the country’s largest urban parks at 5,200 acres filled with over 80 miles of hiking trails along the eastern slope of the Tualatin Mountains overlooking the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.
